Chief Best Umukoro, Aide to the Delta State Governor on Community Development, has praised Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for approving automatic scholarship awards for best graduating students of the state’s four public universities.
He described the initiative as visionary, youth-focused and capable of transforming the educational landscape of the state.
The policy, announced by the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board through its Executive Secretary, Dr Godfrey Enita, provides full sponsorship for outstanding graduates to pursue Master’s and PhD programmes in accredited Nigerian universities.
Beneficiaries of the scheme will be drawn from Delta State University, Abraka; Southern Delta University, Ozoro; University of Delta, Agbor; and Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba.
Umukoro said the governor’s decision reflects a merit-driven leadership style anchored on fairness and long-term investment in human capital, which aligns with the core objectives of the M.O.R.E. Agenda.
He noted that the automatic scholarship scheme ranks among the most impactful educational policies introduced in recent times, adding that it will redefine academic motivation, reward excellence and inspire students across the state to strive for higher achievements.
“By approving automatic scholarships for the best graduating students, our Governor has reaffirmed his belief in education as the strongest tool for shaping the future and driving Delta State's development.”
The governor’s aide further said the initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to youth empowerment, stressing that it would ease the financial constraints that often prevent brilliant graduates from pursuing postgraduate studies.
He also commended the Executive Secretary of the Bursary and Scholarship Board, Dr Enita, for effectively translating the governor’s vision into action through transparent and accessible implementation procedures.
According to Umukoro, the policy places Delta State among sub-national governments with structured incentives for academic excellence, while strengthening the competitiveness and reputation of the state’s universities.
“With this scholarship policy, Governor Oborevwori is raising a new generation of Deltans who are not only educated but globally competitive. It is a legacy that will outlive his administration.”
The automatic scholarship scheme, he said, is expected to boost academic commitment among undergraduates, encourage healthy intellectual competition and further position Delta State as an education-friendly state.
Umukoro urged students to seize the opportunity by pursuing excellence, assuring them that the Oborevwori administration remains committed to policies that empower youths and secure a prosperous future for the state.
