The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old commercial bus driver, Osabuohen Igerevba, in connection with the alleged killing of his 32-year-old girlfriend, Joy Jerome, in Benin City.
The arrest followed the discovery of a woman’s lifeless body near a river by the roadside in Ikpe community on January 10. The Chief Priest of the community alerted the police, prompting a swift response from operatives of the Idogbo Police Division.
The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the development while briefing journalists in Benin on Tuesday. The body was recovered and taken to a hospital where medical personnel confirmed that the woman was dead. Her remains were later deposited at the Stella Obasanjo Mortuary.
Further investigations revealed that the deceased was Joy Jerome, a resident of Upper Sakponba Road, Benin City. Police said she was in a relationship with Igerevba, who also lives in the same area.
The incident reportedly occurred on the night of January 9 when Igerevba picked Jerome up and drove her to his residence. An argument allegedly erupted while they were on the way, with the suspect accusing her of being unfaithful because he had been unable to reach her for about two days.
ASP Ikoedem said the suspect stopped the vehicle and physically assaulted the woman, who later became unresponsive. She was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
In panic, Igerevba allegedly dumped her body at a riverside community, where it was found the following day. The suspect has been taken into custody and reportedly confessed to the crime, police said, adding that investigations are ongoing.
Reacting to the incident, the police spokesperson urged members of the public, especially young women, to be cautious in their relationships and avoid abusive partners. She also called on the public to report domestic violence and relationship disputes promptly to prevent further tragedies.
“Domestic violence should never be overlooked. Timely reporting can save lives,” ASP Ikoedem said, urging parents and guardians to guide young people on peaceful conflict resolution.
