The Vice-Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, has warned newly admitted students against social vices and academic laziness, charging them to embrace discipline and rigorous scholarship.
Ige gave the warning on Thursday during the matriculation ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic session, where about 8,000 students were formally inducted into the institution.
Addressing the matriculants, the Vice-Chancellor said the students emerged from a highly competitive admission process that saw over 18,000 applicants vying for placement, stressing that the selection underscored the university’s commitment to merit.
“This university does not lower its standards to fill its halls; it raises individuals to meet its standards,” he said.
He declared a zero-tolerance stance on social vices, listing examination malpractice, indecent dressing, cultism, rape and robbery among offences that would attract severe sanctions.
“This university has zero tolerance for all forms of social vices. Any student caught engaging in any of them will be summarily expelled,” Ige warned.
The Vice-Chancellor described the institution’s vision as resting on “an unshakable tripod of academic excellence, moral uprightness and service to humanity,” urging the students to shun examination malpractice and intellectual indolence.
“Your greatest asset here is your integrity. You are ambassadors of your families and of this university. We expect decent dressing, respect for all and total compliance with our rules,” he added.
Ige also encouraged the students to deploy their knowledge towards solving societal problems, noting that education should be a tool for positive change.
Acknowledging the challenges of academic life, he assured the matriculants of adequate support, including academic advisers and the Counselling and Human Development Centre.
“Do not struggle in silence. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness,” he said.
Earlier, the Registrar of the university, Mr Olugbenga Arajulu, administered the matriculation oath, with the students pledging to abide by the institution’s regulations and uphold its image.
The ceremony was attended by principal officers of the university, members of staff, parents, guardians and other well-wishers.
