Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has approved the exercise of prerogative of mercy in favour of 77 inmates held in correctional centres across the state.
The decision, taken as part of activities marking the January 1, 2026 New Year, followed the consideration of a report submitted by the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
The approval was announced in a statement released on Thursday by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan.
Speaking on the process, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Kayode Ajulo (SAN), said the council carefully examined each case before making its recommendations.
Ajulo noted that issues such as the severity of offences, duration of incarceration, behaviour while in custody, health condition and chances of successful reintegration were taken into account.
The governor’s approval, according to the statement, covers the unconditional release of some inmates, commutation of death sentences, and reductions in life and other prison terms for several beneficiaries.
The attorney general said the gesture underscores the administration’s commitment to justice reform, humane governance and the decongestion of correctional facilities in the state.
