The national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party and former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has thrown his weight behind the proposed defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other NNPP office holders to the All Progressives Congress.
As reported by Vanguard, Kwankwaso made his position known in a short video that circulated on social media on Tuesday and was later shared by his media assistant, Saifullahi Hassan, sparking intense political discussions within Kano State.
The development signals a clear shift from his earlier position, as the former governor had previously criticised Governor Yusuf and other elected NNPP officials over plans to leave the party, accusing them of turning their backs on the mandate given to them by voters.
Addressing the change in stance, Kwankwaso explained that his decision was guided by the need to respect the political rights of party members and to reduce internal frictions that had continued to trail the party in the state.
He noted that allowing individuals to make their own political choices was necessary to prevent further instability within the NNPP structure.
Analysts say the endorsement suggests an attempt by Kwankwaso to adapt to the ongoing political reshuffle in Kano, choosing accommodation over confrontation as alliances continue to shift.
