The Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh, signalling a major escalation in the state’s political crisis.
The action followed deliberations at plenary, which was presided over by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, and transmitted live on television.
During the sitting, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, presented a formal notice outlining allegations of gross misconduct against the governor before the lawmakers.
Twenty-six members of the Assembly were reported to have endorsed the notice, which they said was brought pursuant to relevant provisions of the Constitution.
Amaewhule announced that the impeachment notice would be transmitted to Governor Fubara within seven days in line with legislative requirements.
In a similar development, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, read a separate notice of allegations against the deputy governor, Ngozi Oduh.
The latest move deepens the political standoff in Rivers State, with more developments expected as the process unfolds.
