No fewer than 24,693 motorists were apprehended for various traffic violations across Ondo State between January and December 2025, the Federal Road Safety Corps has said.
The Ondo State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Dr Samuel Ibitoye, disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Akure on Tuesday, noting that a total of 25,324 traffic offences were recorded during the period under review.
According to him, the offences ranged from speeding and dangerous driving to seatbelt violations, overloading and excessive smoke emission from vehicles, among others.
Ibitoye said the figure represented an increase compared to 2024, when 22,482 offenders were arrested for 23,176 traffic infractions, attributing the rise to intensified enforcement activities by the command.
He explained that the aggressive enforcement strategy was aimed at reducing road crashes, particularly along major highways in the state.
The sector commander said the command expanded its patrol operations and strengthened the use of mobile courts, where offenders were promptly tried and sanctioned by sitting magistrates.
He stressed that offences such as overloading and excessive speeding posed serious risks to road users, noting that unchecked violations often resulted in fatal crashes.
Ibitoye added that the objective of enforcement was not merely to arrest offenders but to instil discipline and encourage a change in driving behaviour among motorists.
He reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to sustained enforcement, public sensitisation and collaboration with neighbouring commands to ensure safer roads across the state.
The sector commander urged motorists and passengers to see road safety as a shared responsibility, warning that violations such as speeding, dangerous driving, failure to use seatbelts and operating faulty vehicles would continue to attract sanctions in line with existing regulations.
