Two members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have pulled back from the ongoing move to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, calling on the legislature to reconsider the process.
The Minority Leader of the House, Sylvanus Nwankwo, who represents Omuma State Constituency, and Peter Abbey, representing Degema Constituency, made their position known at a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday.
The lawmakers said their change of stance followed appeals from elders and political leaders within and outside the state, urging restraint and dialogue.
They appealed to their colleagues to explore alternative ways of resolving the crisis without resorting to impeachment, despite alleging that the governor and his deputy breached constitutional provisions.
According to them, the impeachment process should give way to reconciliation in the interest of peace and stability in the state.
The House had, last Thursday, served impeachment notices on Governor Fubara and his deputy over allegations of gross misconduct.
The development comes amid heightened political tension in Rivers State, with calls from various quarters for a political solution to avert further instability.
