The city of Enhwe stood still on Sunday, January 11, 2025, as eminent personalities from across Nigeria converged to honour one of the Niger Delta’s most respected business leaders and philanthropists, High Chief (Dr.) Emonena Victor Wayles Egukawhore, JP, FCILG, who marked his 60th birthday in a celebration that blended faith, gratitude, culture and leadership.
From the thanksgiving service at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Okpolo-Enhwe, to the grand reception at his country home, popularly known as the High Chief Wayles Citadel, the day unfolded as a powerful tribute to a man whose life story continues to inspire generations.
Speaking at the event, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, described High Chief Wayles as a man of “exceptional character, unshakable values and uncommon dedication to community development,” noting that his life of service stands as evidence that true success is built on purpose, faith and commitment to people.
According to the Governor, the celebrant’s deep attachment to his roots in Okpolo-Enhwe and Patani, as well as his consistent investments in human capital development across the Niger Delta, remain hallmarks of responsible leadership.
“Sixty years of impactful living is not a coincidence. It is the reward of discipline, divine grace and selfless service,” Oborevwori declared.
The celebration gained further national significance with the presence of Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, who commended High Chief Wayles for his stabilizing influence in the region’s maritime and business sectors, describing him as “a dependable bridge between enterprise and community development.”
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, praised the celebrant’s exemplary leadership style, saying his contributions to economic development, youth empowerment and peace-building in the Niger Delta have earned him enduring respect beyond business circles.
“High Chief Wayles represents the best of Niger Delta leadership — visionary, disciplined, people-centred and development-driven,” Lokpobiri stated.
Earlier at the thanksgiving service, the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Oleh, Rt. Rev. John Aruakpor, reminded the congregation that life is a sacred trust from God, urging people to pursue their destinies with gratitude and humility.
Quoting from Psalm 139, the Bishop stressed that survival and achievement flow from divine grace rather than human effort alone.
Among the distinguished guests were Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, traditional rulers, captains of industry, academics, senior government officials and community leaders from across the Niger Delta.
The evening reception at the Wayles Citadel transformed into a cultural and entertainment showcase, featuring electrifying performances by Davido, Mercy Chinwo, Timi Dakolo, AY, Gordons, Whalemouth, Orezi and other leading Nigerian entertainers.
The ceremonial cutting of the Diamond Jubilee cake by the celebrant served as the emotional high point of the night, symbolizing gratitude, continuity and renewed commitment to service.
In his response, High Chief Wayles thanked God for the journey so far, reaffirming that at 60, his resolve to pursue development, peace and service remains stronger than ever.
