Gunmen kill 38yr-old PoS operator

A 38-year-old Point-of-Sale operator, Raphael Eletanye, has been killed by suspected armed robbers during an attack in Benin City, Edo State.

The incident was said to have occurred at about 9:50pm on January 3 along Murtala Muhammed Way, close to Upper Uwa Junction, where the victim operated his PoS business.

Witnesses said the attackers arrived at the location in an unregistered white minibus, launched the attack and fled the scene immediately after shooting the victim.

Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Command said the victim was rushed to the hospital after the attack but later died from injuries sustained.

She said, “On 3rd January, 2026, at about 9:50pm, the Command received a distress call from Upper Uwa Junction along MM Way reporting that an armed robbery incident involving a POS operator, one Raphael Eletanye, aged 38.

“The unknown armed men operated in an unregistered white mini-bus. The Divisional Police Officer, Esigie Division was immediately mobilised to the scene. The victim was immediately rushed to the hospital but unfortunately was confirmed dead.

“A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was shot on the thigh before the assailants carted away an unspecified amount of cash.”

The police spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, had ordered a full-scale investigation, adding that efforts were underway to identify and arrest the perpetrators.

She also urged residents with useful information to contact the command through its emergency lines, assuring the public that security agencies, with support from the state government, were intensifying efforts to curb robbery and other crimes in the state.
