Gunmen suspected to be Fulani militia have attacked Bum community in Chugwi, Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing at least seven residents on New Year’s Eve.
The attack occurred late on December 31, 2025, while residents were observing crossover night to usher in the new year, leaving several others injured and many houses razed.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association, Rwang Tengwong, said the assailants exploited the festive atmosphere to unleash violence on the community.
“While the world welcomed the New Year in celebration, residents of Bum community in Chugwi, Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, were plunged into mourning following a deadly attack by suspected armed Fulani militants/bandits,” Tengwong said.
He explained that the assault took place around 11pm, barely moments before the New Year, when residents were preparing to round off activities for 2025.
“As of this morning, seven (7) corpses have been recovered, while search and rescue efforts are still ongoing, raising fears that the casualty figure may rise.”
Tengwong added that the attack followed earlier security alerts about planned assaults in parts of Jos South, lamenting that Bum community had now joined the list of rural settlements affected by recurring violence in Plateau State.
