The Rivers State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a family of six who reportedly died after inhaling fumes from a generator set in Ogale community, Eleme Local Government Area of the state.
The victims, said to be a couple and their four children, were discovered dead on Sunday after the generator, which had been running overnight, continued operating into the morning hours.
A resident of the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said neighbours became worried after noticing unusual silence from the house and raised the alarm.
According to the source, the family had been making preparations to return to Port Harcourt after the holidays before the tragic incident occurred.
“They were found lifeless in different parts of the house. It is a very sad situation and we are appealing to the police to thoroughly investigate what happened,” the source said.
The incident had earlier been shared on social media, where a Facebook user lamented the sudden loss of the entire family in a single day.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Grace Iringe-Koko, said preliminary information indicated that the generator was kept inside the living room to prevent theft, adding that investigations were still ongoing.
