A Kano resident, Abubakar Muhammad, has accused the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre of medical negligence following the death of his wife, Aishatu Umar, after a surgical procedure at the facility.
As reported by Daily Trust, Muhammad alleged that his wife died from complications arising from an operation carried out at the centre in September, claiming that a surgical instrument was mistakenly left inside her body during the procedure.
He told journalists that Umar, who had been unwell for several months, began to suffer persistent abdominal pain shortly after the surgery and repeatedly returned to the hospital to lodge complaints.
According to him, she was reportedly given pain-relief drugs on each visit and reassured that the discomfort was a normal post-surgery experience, without any recommendation for scans or further medical checks.
Muhammad said the pain persisted for about four months before his wife sought help at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital and later Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where tests allegedly revealed that a pair of surgical scissors had been left in her abdomen.
He explained that arrangements were being made for a corrective operation to remove the object, but Umar reportedly died in the early hours of Monday before the procedure could be performed.
Describing the incident as a grave professional failure, the bereaved husband said the development had left his family devastated and raised broader concerns about standards in the healthcare system, urging the authorities to ensure accountability.
He called on the Kano State Government and relevant regulatory bodies to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the matter, insisting that those found culpable should be sanctioned.
When contacted, the management of the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre had yet to issue an official response as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board has ordered an immediate investigation into the allegation. The Executive Secretary of the board, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, said on Tuesday that the probe would establish the facts surrounding the incident.
In a statement, the board expressed sympathy with the family of the deceased and assured that the investigation would be transparent and professional, adding that appropriate action would be taken if negligence is established, while reaffirming its commitment to patient safety across public health facilities in the state.
