With the increasing demand for a Tax Identification Number for banking, employment, business registration and access to government services, Nigerian tax authorities have simplified the process for individuals.
The Federal Inland Revenue Service now allows Nigerians to retrieve their Tax ID using their National Identification Number, making the process faster, free and entirely online.
According to the FIRS, the service enables applicants to obtain their Tax ID within minutes, provided the personal details supplied match records with the National Identity Management Commission.
Applicants are required to have their 11-digit NIN, ensure their names and date of birth are correctly captured as registered with NIMC, and have access to the internet through a mobile phone or computer.
To retrieve the Tax ID, individuals are expected to visit the official FIRS Tax ID portal, select the “Individual” category and choose NIN as the preferred means of identification.
After entering the NIN, users are prompted to supply their first name, last name and date of birth, grant consent for identity verification and submit the details for automated confirmation.
Once verification is successful, the Tax ID is displayed on the screen for saving or copying, as the number is required for future financial and official transactions, with the initiative aimed at reducing physical visits to tax offices nationwide.
