Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the Senate of deliberately stalling amendments to the Electoral Act 2022, warning that failure to review the law could undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, Atiku said loopholes in the current Electoral Act contributed to the widespread irregularities witnessed during the 2023 elections and made it difficult for petitioners to successfully challenge disputed results in court.
Atiku said correcting the flaws exposed in the last election required an urgent review of the legal framework governing Nigeria’s electoral process.
He alleged that the Senate had shown a lack of commitment to passing the necessary amendments, a development he described as troubling ahead of preparations for the next general elections.
Atiku said a recent investigative report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism highlighted what he called legislative failure and should serve as a wake-up call for the National Assembly.
According to him, the credibility of the 2027 polls depends largely on the timely passage of the amended Electoral Act, stressing that any delay would amount to premeditated electoral manipulation.
He warned that failure to conclude the amendment process before the next election would signal an attempt to compromise the process even before voting begins.
