Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed on Friday, plunging large parts of the country into darkness in the first system failure recorded in 2026.
Checks from the Nigerian Independent System Operator revealed that power generation dropped to zero megawatts, indicating a total shutdown of the grid.
The data showed that electricity supply to all the 11 distribution companies nationwide was cut off at about 1pm, as load allocation fell to zero megawatts
The affected distribution companies include Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja and Yola, all of which recorded zero power allocation during the incident.
Efforts to restore supply were ongoing as of the time of filing this report.
