Tension has enveloped Okon-Aku community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State following the killing of a youth, Mr Igwe Akuma, during a violent clash.
Akuma, a native of the Ndi Uma compound, was reportedly attacked when the crisis broke out, sparking fear and unrest across the community.
In the aftermath of the killing, angry youths allegedly set several houses, vehicles and other valuables belonging to residents on fire.
The incident was condemned by the Udumeze of Ohafia, Ezie Ohamoha Awa Orji Udonsi, alongside the Ohafia Council of Monarchs, in a statement issued on Saturday.
The traditional rulers disclosed that the deceased was preparing for his wedding, which was expected to take place in a few days before his life was cut short.
The statement read in part: “The Udumeze condemns in its entirety the gruesome murder of a young Ohafian who was said to be getting married in a few days,” while commiserating with the victim’s family.
The council stressed that no provocation justified the killing of an Ohafia son, warning that violence and destruction were dangerous ways to usher in a new year.
It also appealed for calm between the Ndi Owom and Ndi Uma compounds, saying efforts were ongoing in collaboration with security agencies to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said officers from the Ohafia Divisional Headquarters had arrested some suspects.
She added that two police tactical teams were deployed to the area to stabilise the situation, while those arrested were being interrogated.
