Akure—Ondo State Governor, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, on Thursday paid glowing tribute to the founding fathers and successive leaders of the state, saying their sacrifices and stewardship laid the foundation for its present development as the state marks its 50th anniversary.
Speaking at a world press conference held at the Government House, Akure, to kick off activities for the Golden Jubilee celebration, the Governor described the anniversary as more than a ceremonial milestone, noting that it presents a historic opportunity for deep reflection, assessment and future planning.
According to him, five decades provide sufficient basis to evaluate the ideals that informed the creation of Ondo State and the extent to which successive administrations have advanced those ideals.
Tracing the origins of the state, Aiyedatiwa recalled the long years of political agitation, intellectual engagement and moral advocacy that eventually led to its creation, stressing that the struggle was driven by the desire for inclusive governance and administrative self-determination.
He explained that Ondo State was born out of the conviction that development is best achieved when governance is closer to the people and anchored on equity, identity and shared aspirations.
The Governor singled out the late Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, the first civilian governor of the state, describing him as a principled statesman whose leadership set enduring standards of integrity, accountability and public service.
He also acknowledged the roles played by notable nationalists and elders, including the late Chief Ayo Fasanmi, the late Barrister Deji Adegoroye, Pa Reuben Fasoranti and Basorun Seinde Arogbofa, noting that their contributions remain deeply embedded in the state’s political and social history.
Aiyedatiwa further commended past military and civilian administrators for their roles in shaping the state’s development trajectory, from the pioneer Military Administrator, Wing Commander David Ikpeme, through Colonel Moses Fasanya, to civilian governors such as Chief Bamidele Olumilua, Chief Adebayo Adefarati, Dr Olusegun Agagu, Dr Olusegun Mimiko and his immediate predecessor, the late Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN.
He also paid tribute to the first generation of public servants, led by Chief Theophilus Iwajomo and Chief Elkanah Adeneye Emuleomo, for laying the groundwork for an efficient public service and institutional governance.
Highlighting achievements recorded over the years, the Governor cited progress in education, healthcare, agriculture, industrial growth, road infrastructure, public sector reforms and human capital development, noting that these were attained despite economic headwinds, population growth, environmental challenges and security concerns.
He attributed the resilience of the state to what he described as the enduring “Ondo spirit” of diligence, intellect and perseverance.
Outlining activities lined up for the Golden Jubilee, Aiyedatiwa listed interfaith thanksgiving services across the state, a public lecture titled “Ondo State: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” cultural and historical exhibitions, as well as a gala and award night to honour outstanding contributions to the state.
On governance, the Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to people-oriented development, driven by fiscal discipline, institutional effectiveness and social inclusion.
He said the government is prioritising infrastructure development, urban renewal, healthcare improvement, education reform, agricultural value chains and economic diversification through its “OUR EASE” policy framework, in partnership with the private sector and development agencies.
Security, he added, remains central to development, stressing that the administration is strengthening collaboration with security agencies and community-based intelligence networks to protect lives, farmlands and investments.
Looking ahead, Aiyedatiwa unveiled a vision for the next 50 years focused on knowledge-based growth, industrial competitiveness, environmental sustainability, digital transformation and strong democratic institutions.
“Our goal is to build a state that does not merely adapt to change but helps shape it—where prosperity is sustainable and opportunities are accessible to all,” he said.
He urged citizens, both at home and in the diaspora, to see the Golden Jubilee as a collective heritage and a shared responsibility towards building a more prosperous Ondo State.
Clarifying his legacy priorities, the Governor said while he does not intend to create institutions unnecessarily, projects such as the ongoing judiciary complex will stand as enduring landmarks of his administration.
He also disclosed that plans for a seaport, petrochemical fertiliser plants and bitumen exploration are underway, noting that these initiatives would boost agricultural productivity and generate employment.
On industrialisation, Aiyedatiwa revealed that approvals have been secured for a refinery, fertiliser and petrochemical plant, with groundbreaking expected in the first quarter of the year.
Addressing power supply challenges, he said the state is working closely with electricity distribution companies, adding that electricity regulation has commenced even though the state is not yet generating its own power. He noted that O’datiwa prepaid meters are currently being distributed to residents to improve access and transparency.
In his vote of thanks, the Secretary to the State Government and Chairman of the Ondo @50 Planning Committee, Dr Taiwo Fasoranti, recalled the historic creation of the state, describing himself as fortunate to have witnessed the event. He appealed to the media to give extensive coverage to the anniversary activities.
Dignitaries at the event included the Deputy Governor, Dr Olayide Adelami; the Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, represented by his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Ololade Gbegudu; the Chief of Staff, Prince Segun Omojuwa; the Chief Justice of Ondo State, Justice Olusegun Odusola; APC State Chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin; members of the State Executive Council and House of Assembly, as well as other political appointees and stakeholders.
