Former Ekiti State Governor, Segun Oni, has switched allegiance from the Social Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, officially registering with the ruling party at his country home in Ifaki Ekiti.
The Coordinator of the APC electronic registration exercise in the state, Adesola Adedayo, disclosed the development on Monday in Ado Ekiti, describing Oni’s decision as a major gain for the party.
Adedayo, who also serves as the Commissioner for Youth Development, said the former governor’s registration on Sunday had strengthened the APC’s ongoing membership drive across the state.
Oni governed Ekiti State between 2007 and 2010 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party and later emerged as the SDP’s governorship candidate in the 2022 election.
Hailing the defection, Adedayo said Oni is a seasoned and widely accepted political figure whose entry would enhance the party’s structure and electoral prospects.
He added that the move signalled a significant political realignment ahead of the 2026 Ekiti governorship election and the 2027 general elections.
The commissioner urged party leaders and members to intensify grassroots mobilisation, noting that Oni’s registration came shortly after Governor Biodun Oyebanji revalidated his APC membership, a development he said would further energise the party ahead of future polls.
