Tragedy as mother of five dies after doctor reportedly leaves scissors in her body

A mother of five, Aishatu Umar, has died in Kano State following an alleged case of medical negligence at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre, a government-owned health facility.

A relative of the deceased, Abubakar Mohammed, said Aishatu passed away after months of severe abdominal pain that reportedly followed a surgical procedure carried out at the hospital about four months ago.

Mohammed said the surgery was performed in September, after which the woman repeatedly complained of worsening pain, but was allegedly given only pain-relief drugs whenever she returned to the hospital.

He explained that further medical tests were eventually conducted a few days ago, which allegedly revealed that a pair of scissors had been left inside her body during the earlier operation.

According to him, plans were made for another surgery to address the complication, but Aishatu died before the procedure could be carried out.

Mohammed described the incident as a grave act of negligence and called on the Kano State Government and relevant health authorities to investigate and ensure accountability.

Reacting, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board said it had ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.

The board, through its Executive Secretary, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, assured the public that the probe would be thorough and transparent, adding that appropriate action would be taken if negligence is established.
