A Nigerian legal practitioner, Bolanle Cole, has advised Nigerians considering relocation to the United Kingdom to carefully assess their intended place of residence, warning that living conditions and opportunities differ significantly across the country.
Cole, in a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, said many prospective migrants wrongly assume that life in the UK is the same everywhere, stressing that factors such as employment prospects, cost of living and lifestyle vary widely from city to city.
He noted that although Greater London remains a major attraction for professionals in sectors such as finance, technology, law, media and healthcare, the high cost of accommodation and daily expenses often poses serious challenges for new arrivals.
According to him, cities like Manchester and Birmingham present more moderate alternatives, offering access to jobs in media, engineering, manufacturing and finance, alongside relatively lower living costs, though newcomers may need time to adjust to local cultures and accents.
Cole added that Scotland, particularly Edinburgh and Glasgow, provides a calmer environment with cheaper housing and opportunities in finance, tourism and renewable energy, but warned that adapting to the local accent could be demanding.
He also identified Leeds, Liverpool, Bristol, Bath and Newcastle as cities with growing job markets and better affordability, while cautioning that harsher weather conditions in some northern areas could be difficult for migrants.
The lawyer further described parts of Wales and Northern Ireland as underexplored options, citing lower rent, peaceful surroundings and expanding opportunities in technology, finance and digital industries.
He emphasised that relocation should be based on careful planning, aligning career goals with financial capacity and personal resilience, rather than making hurried decisions driven by the urge to leave Nigeria.
Cole advised intending migrants to think long-term before travelling, noting that settling in an unsuitable location can make adjustment abroad unnecessarily difficult, especially in the early years.
