A 99-year-old woman from Afaraukwu community in Umuahia, Abia State, Mrs Sarah Nwanyisunday Oparaocha, has appealed to the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, saying it is her lifelong wish to see him return home.
Oparaocha made the appeal on Saturday while speaking with journalists at her residence in Afaraukwu, the hometown of Kanu, during a community gathering held to demand his release.
The nonagenarian said she had been praying daily for Nigerian leaders to show compassion and facilitate Kanu’s freedom, expressing hope that she would see him before the end of her life.
According to her, approaching her 100th birthday had strengthened her desire to witness Kanu’s return to his community while she was still alive.
She said she often becomes emotional during her morning prayers, urging the government to grant her wish by allowing the IPOB leader reunite with his people.
The elderly woman noted that no one knows when death would come, adding that seeing Kanu again would bring her fulfilment and peace.
She also used the occasion to advise younger generations to adopt healthy lifestyles, encouraging the consumption of natural local foods, which she said contributed to longevity, while cautioning against excessive intake of processed meals.
Kanu has remained in detention amid ongoing legal proceedings, with repeated calls from supporters and groups in the South-East seeking his release.
