There was tension at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, Ondo State, following the alleged assault of a medical doctor by relatives of a surgical patient within the hospital premises.
The doctor, identified as Dr. Adeniyi A., a registrar in the Department of Internal Medicine, was reportedly attacked while attending to patients at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the facility.
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors said the assailants were believed to be relatives of a patient undergoing surgical treatment at the hospital.
In a statement jointly signed by its President, Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, Secretary-General, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, and Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr. Abdulmajid Yahya Ibrahim, the association condemned the incident.
The NARD described the attack as alarming and reflective of a rising trend of violence against healthcare workers, warning that hospitals were gradually becoming unsafe for medical personnel.
It expressed concern that a doctor could be physically assaulted within a health facility, stressing that medical professionals should not face threats or harm while carrying out life-saving duties.
While commending the prompt intervention of the Association of Resident Doctors at FMC Owo, the group called for urgent measures to enhance security across the hospital.
The association also demanded the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the attack, as well as appropriate compensation and medical care for the injured doctor, warning that failure to act decisively could force it to take further steps to protect its members.
