The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Adebowale Lawal, has confirmed the arrest of 11 suspects in connection with the abduction of worshippers at a church in Uso community, urging religious leaders to scale down late-night services amid prevailing security concerns.
Lawal gave the advice on Friday while briefing journalists in Akure, where he called on churches, mosques and other worship centres to strengthen security measures, install Closed-Circuit Television cameras as directed by the state government, and notify security agencies ahead of large gatherings.
The police chief said the measures became necessary following they recent kidnapping of worshippers at a Celestial Church in Uso.
According to him, the suspects were apprehended during a joint operation involving the police, the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups. He added that one of the six abducted victims had been rescued, while efforts were ongoing to secure the release of the remaining captives and dismantle the criminal network responsible for the attack.
Providing an update on another security incident in Idanre during the All Progressives Congress ward congress, Lawal disclosed that 13 suspects linked to the violence, which left three persons dead, had been arraigned in court. He said investigations were continuing to track down other accomplices and ensure justice for the victims.
The CP further revealed that the command had recorded several breakthroughs in its fight against crime from January to date, including arrests for kidnapping, armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms and homicide.
He listed items recovered from suspects to include guns, ammunition, vehicles and motorcycles, noting that eight kidnapped victims had also been rescued within the period.
