The Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission has reaffirmed that Eba Island belongs to Ondo State, urging that any boundary dispute arising from recent developments in the area be resolved through constitutional means.
The commission said it had monitored events surrounding the island, particularly following reports of oil discovery and competing territorial claims.
In a statement, OSOPADEC maintained that Eba Island is part of Atijere Kingdom in Mahin Ward 4 of Ilaje Local Government Area, noting that the island has historically been inhabited and administered by Ilaje people under recognised traditional institutions in Ondo State.
The Executive Chairman of the commission, Olabiyi Olaleye Poroye, declared that the island remained an integral part of the state despite ongoing boundary discussions with Ogun State.
He stressed that the territory had neither been ceded nor relinquished under any agreement, insisting that the state’s jurisdiction over the island was clear pending any constitutionally recognised boundary adjustment.
OSOPADEC said historical records, cultural ties and administrative governance under Ondo State institutions supported its claim, adding that such factors were key in determining territorial legitimacy under constitutional and customary law.
While welcoming responsible investment that could boost national oil production and economic growth, the commission cautioned against using resource discoveries as a basis for altering established boundaries.
It noted that interstate boundary matters fall within the mandate of the National Boundary Commission and other constitutional authorities.
The commission called for immediate recourse to lawful dispute resolution mechanisms, independent verification of boundaries using historical and legal evidence, strict adherence to due process and sustained dialogue among stakeholders to preserve peace.
OSOPADEC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of host communities and promoting peaceful coexistence, while pledging continued collaboration with the Federal Government, relevant agencies and investors.
