A Nottingham Crown Court in the United Kingdom has sentenced a Nigerian man, Adedapo Adegbola, to life imprisonment for the murder of his former girlfriend, Stephanie Irons.
Adegbola, 40, was sentenced on Thursday by Judge Nirmal Shant KC, who ordered that he must serve a minimum of 25 years before becoming eligible for parole.
Passing sentence, the judge said Adegbola had been in a brief relationship with Irons after they met as colleagues at work, noting that his controlling behaviour eventually led the young woman to end the relationship.
The court heard that Adegbola was unwilling to accept the breakup and later carried out the fatal attack at Irons’s residence.
The incident occurred on October 21, when Adegbola stabbed the 23-year-old in the neck at her home on Westdale Lane West in Mapperley, Nottinghamshire.
Prosecutors told the court that investigations showed Adegbola had purchased two knives and travelled by taxi to the victim’s home after finishing work on the day of the attack.
Nottinghamshire Police said Irons died from a knife wound to the neck, while defensive injuries were also found on her arms, indicating she tried to protect herself.
Adegbola pleaded guilty to the charge of murder on January 26, bringing an end to the trial.
