The Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Police Force have strengthened collaboration to combat smuggling and other cross-border crimes along the Idiroko border corridor in .
This followed a high-level courtesy visit by the police Area Commander in Idiroko and the Border Patrol Commander to the Ogun I Area Command of the customs service as part of efforts to enhance border security and tackle illicit trade.
According to a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the command, , a Deputy Superintendent of Customs, the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the two agencies through intelligence sharing and coordinated operations aimed at dismantling trans-border criminal networks and economic sabotage.
Speaking during the meeting, the Acting Customs Area Controller, , said although the security situation around the axis remained relatively calm, sustaining the stability would require stronger collaboration and timely exchange of intelligence among security agencies.
Afeni stressed that safeguarding national security was a collective responsibility, urging officers of both agencies to see themselves as partners working towards a common goal rather than rivals in the field.
He added that the renewed partnership aligns with the policy direction of the Comptroller-General of Customs, , which emphasises collaboration, consolidation and innovation in strengthening the service’s operational effectiveness.
In his remarks, the Idiroko Area Commander of the police, , reaffirmed the force’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the customs service.
Segun noted that the collaboration would focus on ensuring the safety of residents in border communities, providing tactical support to customs operations against illegal trade and sharing critical intelligence to stay ahead of criminal elements operating along the Idiroko–Igolo border corridor.
“We will continue to synergise, share intelligence and work together for the benefit of the state,” Afeni said, reiterating the command’s commitment to sustaining strong partnerships with relevant security agencies and stakeholders.
The meeting ended with both agencies reaffirming their resolve to strengthen joint operations aimed at curbing smuggling and enhancing security in border communities across the state.
