A 27-year-old man, Quozeem Awe, has allegedly stabbed a nursing mother, Deborah Adeleye, to death during a dispute over unpaid rent in Ore, headquarters of Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The suspect was also said to have injured the deceased’s husband, Mathew Adeleye, and their daughter during the early morning attack, which reportedly occurred around 5 a.m. at the Daystar area of Ore-Alaba, throwing residents into panic.
Eyewitnesses said the violence followed a lingering disagreement between the landlord’s son and tenants in the building owned by his father, allegedly over rent payment issues that had lasted for weeks.
Narrating his ordeal from a hospital bed, the injured husband said tenants had earlier received a quit notice despite their rent not yet expiring, adding that his tenancy was billed to lapse on March 16 and arrangements had already been made to relocate.
He explained that the suspect allegedly forced his way into the apartment after gaining access through the entrance door and immediately attacked his wife, who was resting on the bed, stabbing her fatally before turning on him during a struggle.
The couple’s daughter, identified as Tunrayo Adeleye, reportedly sustained injuries while attempting to flee the scene, while neighbours later rushed the victims to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police sources said the suspect later surrendered himself at a nearby station, while the deceased’s body was deposited in a morgue.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, said the suspect attacked three tenants, adding that one victim was confirmed dead at the General Hospital, Ore, while two others were receiving treatment.
He disclosed that a blood-stained cutlass was recovered from the scene and that the suspect had been charged to court and remanded in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.
