Several residents have reportedly been killed while others are still unaccounted for after suspected herdsmen attacked Ojantele community located along the Abuja–Otukpo Road in Benue State.
The assailants were said to have invaded the community on Friday, firing shots at villagers and forcing many people to flee for safety.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen stormed the area in large numbers and began shooting sporadically, creating panic as residents ran into surrounding bushes to escape the violence.
Preliminary reports indicate that over 20 people may have lost their lives in the attack, although the exact casualty figure has yet to be confirmed.
The Chairman of Apa Local Government Area, Adams Ogwola, confirmed the incident on Friday afternoon.
He stated that the authorities were still assessing the situation and could not immediately verify the number of those killed or missing.
Meanwhile, security personnel have reportedly been mobilised to the community as efforts continue to stabilise the area and prevent further attacks.
