The Ondo State Police Command has uncovered a Point of Sale fraud syndicate in Akure, arresting and arraigning three suspects over the alleged theft of N632,000 from a trader.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that the breakthrough was recorded under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal.
According to the police, the case was reported on March 19, 2026, by a trader, Mrs. Obadaye Omotola, who operates at Ire-Akari in Akure.
The victim alleged that the suspects visited her shop under the pretext of purchasing provisions and engaged her in what appeared to be a legitimate transaction.
During the process, the suspects allegedly distracted her and swapped her MoniePoint POS machine with another device, having earlier observed and memorised her Personal Identification Number.
Police investigations revealed that the suspects subsequently used the stolen device to access her account and fraudulently transferred N632,000 into accounts under their control.
Following the report, detectives launched an intelligence-led operation which led to the arrest of three suspects identified as Adeyemo Joshua, Opemiposi Olawale, and Oluwashola Blessing, while another accomplice remains at large.
The police said the suspects had made confessional statements aiding ongoing investigations, adding that efforts were underway to apprehend the fleeing suspect and recover the stolen funds.
“The suspects have been charged to court and remanded in a correctional facility,” the statement added.
The Commissioner of Police also commended the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his support and leadership, noting that his strategic approach to tackling financial crimes had strengthened operations within the command.
The command urged traders and POS operators to be vigilant, advising them to keep their devices secure, shield their PINs during transactions, and report suspicious activities promptly.
It reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, warning that criminal elements would be tracked down and prosecuted.
