Suspected bandits on Sunday abducted eight worshippers during a service at an ECWA Church in Omugo, Oro-Ago community, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
It was gathered that three of the victims were later rescued by a joint team of security operatives, forest guards and local vigilantes.
The attack came hours after the Coordinator of the Joint Security Watch for Kwara South Senatorial District, Zubair Olaitan, reportedly raised the alarm over a possible attack on communities in Ifelodun, Irepodun and Isin local government areas.
Reacting, the Kwara State Government directed security agencies and local vigilantes to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and secure the release of the remaining abductees.
The government also commended the swift response of security personnel and community-based operatives for facilitating the rescue of three victims.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, the government condemned the attack, describing the targeting of a place of worship as cowardly and unacceptable.
The statement urged security agencies, forest guards, vigilantes and residents to sustain collaboration to curb criminal activities in the affected areas.
It added that ongoing security operations, particularly the combing of forests, had begun to yield results in reducing the activities of criminal elements, assuring residents of the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
