Suspected vandal electrocuted while tampering with transformer in Ondo community

Residents of Omifon community in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State were gripped by panic last Wednesday after a suspected cable vandal reportedly lost his life while attempting to interfere with a power transformer.

Sources in the community said the unidentified man was allegedly trying to remove an armoured cable linked to the electricity installation when he was struck by a high-voltage current.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that electricity supply was active at the time of the incident, leaving the suspect exposed to a fatal electric shock.

“The power was on when the man attempted to tamper with the transformer. The current electrocuted him instantly,” the source said.

Officials of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company were later notified and reportedly arrived at the scene to evacuate the corpse.

The incident has stirred concern among residents, many of whom described the development as tragic, while lamenting the recurring cases of vandalism targeting electricity facilities in the area.

Community leaders subsequently called on residents to remain watchful and safeguard public infrastructure, urging members of the public to promptly report suspicious movements around transformers and other utility installations to security agencies.
