The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Yilwatda, has ruled out the possibility of granting automatic tickets to National Assembly members ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yilwatda made the clarification during a media chat in Abuja, amid growing speculation that some serving lawmakers could be handed return tickets without going through party primaries.
He said, “There is no automatic ticket in our constitution. The party cannot promise an automatic ticket.”
The APC chairman stressed that both the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act provide clear guidelines on how candidates must emerge, insisting that no individual would be exempted from the laid-down procedures.
“There’s no automatic ticket in our constitution. The constitution of the party does not provide for automatic tickets, and the party cannot wishfully promise automatic ticket to anyone,” he added.
He further noted that the Electoral Act equally does not recognise such an arrangement, emphasising that all aspirants must emerge through constitutionally approved processes.
“The Electoral Act also does not provide for automatic ticket. It says all primaries must be either by consensus or by direct primaries,” Yilwatda said.
The APC chairman maintained that all party members seeking elective positions would be subjected to the same process, in line with the party’s guidelines.
“All members of our party will undergo the same process. We will use the Electoral Act, our party guidelines, and constitution to get people to participate in primaries,” he stated.
He, however, indicated that performance would play a key role in determining the chances of incumbents seeking re-election, noting that party members and constituents would ultimately decide.
“The people and party members will judge those who have performed very well,” he said.
