A member of the National Working Committee of the African Democratic Congress has ruled out the chances of a presidential ticket pairing Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, describing it as incapable of securing enough votes to win the 2027 general election.
The Deputy National Financial Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Fabiyi Oladimeji, stated this while addressing journalists in Abuja, where he assessed potential political alignments ahead of the next presidential poll.
Oladimeji argued that only a joint ticket involving Atiku Abubakar and Obi could produce the electoral strength required to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.
According to him, voting patterns from the 2023 general election indicate that a combination of Obi and Kwankwaso would be insufficient to unseat the APC at the national level.
He said, “An Obi-Kwankwaso alliance cannot give us the needed numbers. The most formidable option remains Atiku and Obi. When you look at the combined votes recorded by the major contenders, it becomes clear that a united front will make a significant difference.”
The ADC chieftain added that ongoing political realignments should prioritise national interest over personal ambition, noting that some key figures had already signalled willingness to support a consensus candidate.
He disclosed that Atiku had pledged to back whoever emerges as a flag bearer, while former minister, Rotimi Amaechi, had also expressed a similar position.
Oladimeji urged Obi to follow suit, stressing that collective sacrifice among opposition leaders would be crucial to mounting a formidable challenge in 2027.
“This is beyond individual aspirations; it is about repositioning the country. If these forces work together, Nigerians will witness a different political outcome,” he added.
