Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has urged newly deployed corps members to approach their service year with dedication and a strong sense of purpose.
The governor gave the charge during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream II of the National Youth Service Corps held at the permanent orientation camp in Ikare-Akoko.
Represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Omoyofunmi Segun Henry, Aiyedatiwa described the one-year national service as a critical phase that demands discipline, commitment and responsibility. He noted that the NYSC scheme remains instrumental in fostering national unity and driving grassroots development.
He encouraged the corps members to make meaningful contributions in their host communities by identifying local challenges and offering practical solutions capable of improving lives.
The governor assured participants of their safety, stating that the state government had sustained peace through collaboration with security agencies. He also advised them to take advantage of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme to equip themselves with relevant skills for self-reliance.
Aiyedatiwa reiterated his administration’s commitment to the welfare of corps members, adding that efforts were ongoing to upgrade camp facilities, including the construction of a 216-bed hostel to improve accommodation.
In a goodwill message delivered on behalf of the chairman of the state NYSC Governing Board, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Lanre Abiodun, commended the corps members for their orderly conduct since arrival at the camp and urged them to maintain the standard throughout the orientation exercise.
He also assured them of continued support for their welfare and security, while applauding camp officials for ensuring a hitch-free programme.
Earlier, the State Coordinator of the scheme, Kuburat Omowumi Bakare, welcomed dignitaries and participants, expressing appreciation to the state government for its sustained support.
She disclosed that the orientation course commenced on April 22, 2026, with the safe arrival of corps members and officials, noting that the swearing-in marked their formal induction into national service.
Bakare advised the corps members to actively participate in camp activities, adhere strictly to regulations and maintain good conduct at all times. She also appealed to employers and host communities to provide a conducive environment for corps members posted to them.
She further commended stakeholders, including SUNBETH GLOBAL CONCEPTS LIMITED, for supporting infrastructure development, particularly the installation of a solar-powered mini water station to improve water supply at the camp.
The event was attended by government officials, members of the judiciary, security agencies and other stakeholders, who reiterated their support for the objectives of the NYSC scheme.
