A youth-based political group in Akure, Ondo State, has condemned the destruction of its campaign billboards endorsing the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the act as unlawful and a threat to democratic principles.
The group, Akure Youth for BTO, in a statement issued on Thursday, alleged that several of its billboards were vandalised at strategic locations across the Akure metropolis, including St Peter’s Unity, Road Block and Airport Junction.
It accused suspected political opponents of orchestrating the act in a bid to stifle its legitimate political activities.
The group further disclosed that it had obtained surveillance footage identifying those allegedly involved in the incident, noting that the evidence had been secured.
Despite this, it said it would delay taking immediate legal steps in order to preserve peace and uphold democratic values.
Akure Youth for BTO added that arrangements had been concluded to fix and replace the damaged billboards to sustain the visibility of its campaign message.
It, however, warned that any recurrence would attract firm legal action, including forwarding evidence to security agencies and making it public.
The group also urged relevant security agencies to strengthen monitoring efforts to protect political materials, emphasising the need to safeguard citizens’ rights within a democratic setting.
It reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful and issue-driven engagement, while restating its support for Tinubu’s re-election bid.
