Several persons have been reportedly killed while others were abducted following an attack by armed bandits on Bunkasau village in the Zarummai ward of Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The assault, which occurred late Friday night, threw the community into chaos as heavily armed assailants stormed the area in large numbers.
A local source disclosed that the attackers, estimated to be about 80, arrived on motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately on residents before whisking away several victims, mostly women. The gunmen were also said to have carted away livestock belonging to the villagers.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, said the attack took place at night, leaving many families devastated.
He added that efforts were ongoing to locate missing persons in the aftermath of the raid.
The resident appealed to both the Federal Government and the Zamfara State Government to urgently deploy security operatives to the area to prevent further attacks and restore peace.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said the exact number of casualties could not yet be determined.
He, however, noted that security personnel had been deployed to the affected community to stabilise the situation.
Abubakar also urged residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could aid in tracking the activities of criminal elements in the state.
