Suspected Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province insurgents have launched another midnight attack on Benisheikh, the headquarters of Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State, heightening fresh security concerns in the region.
Sources said the attack, which began around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, was targeted at a military formation along the Maiduguri–Damaturu Road.
The assailants were reportedly advancing towards the 29 Task Force Brigade of Operation Hadin Kai, the same base where Brigadier-General O. O. Braimah and several soldiers were killed in an earlier assault on April 9.
A source familiar with the development said the insurgents appeared to be attempting a renewed offensive on the facility, raising fears of sustained attacks on military positions in the area.
Meanwhile, aerial surveillance intensified around Maiduguri, with fighter jets and military helicopters observed hovering over the state capital, located about 75 kilometres from Benisheikh.
As of the time of filing this report, details of casualties or the extent of damage remained unclear.
