A middle-aged man identified simply as Ife has allegedly killed his mother in Supare-Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The victim, said to be a health officer, was reportedly attacked in her residence on Thursday afternoon.
Sources in the community said the suspect was earlier seen holding a stick, which raised suspicion among residents.
One of the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the suspect dismissed concerns when questioned, claiming he intended to use the object for cooking.
“People saw him in the afternoon and asked what he wanted to use it for, but he said he wanted to cook. Sadly, we later heard that the mother had only returned home briefly to pick something when the incident happened,” the source said.
The source further alleged that the suspect had previously displayed violent behaviour towards the deceased.
When our correspondent visited the area, residents were seen in small groups discussing the incident in subdued tones.
A resident, who also declined to be named, said operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun, had arrested the suspect.
She added that the corpse of the deceased had been evacuated by the operatives.
“The boy, according to residents, is known for taking hard drugs. The Amotekun Corps have taken him into custody,” she said.
Efforts to get official confirmation from relevant authorities were ongoing as of the time of filing this report.
