An Area Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State, has dissolved the Islamic marriage between Rashida Bashir and her husband, Bashir Adegboye, following allegations of infidelity.
Delivering judgment, the presiding judge, Hammed Ajumonbi, held that the respondent’s correspondence before the court indicated his consent to the separation.
The court consequently terminated the marriage and directed the petitioner to observe a three-month iddah period in line with Islamic injunctions.
Custody of the couple’s two children was awarded to the mother, while the father was ordered to pay N20,000 monthly for their upkeep and welfare.
The court also granted the respondent access to the children at reasonable times.
Earlier in her testimony, the petitioner accused her husband of engaging in relationships with multiple women and treating her with disrespect.
She told the court that she feared contracting diseases due to his alleged lifestyle and could no longer continue in the marriage.
Rashida further claimed that although her husband had earlier stated he had two wives, she later discovered that several other women had borne children for him.
She added that some of the women frequently contacted her with insults, worsening her distress and influencing her decision to seek the dissolution of the union.
