The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Monday challenged the African Democratic Congress to provide evidence of its application to use Eagle Square, dismissing claims that the party was denied access to the venue for its national convention.
Wike, who spoke with journalists during an inspection of ongoing projects in Abuja, maintained that no formal request had been submitted to his office or any relevant authority.
He insisted that Eagle Square remains accessible to organisations that comply with laid-down procedures.
The minister’s reaction followed allegations by the ADC that it was prevented from using both Eagle Square and the Velodrome of the National Stadium in Abuja for its convention scheduled for April 14.
Describing the claims as baseless, Wike said any organisation alleging denial of access should present proof of a duly submitted and acknowledged application.
According to him, the party’s claim was an attempt to attract public sympathy rather than a reflection of actual events.
Earlier, the party, through its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, had accused authorities of frustrating its preparations by allegedly ignoring its requests for the use of the facilities.
The ADC subsequently announced plans to hold its convention at the Rainbow Event Centre in Abuja.
Reacting, Wike reiterated that no official request had been received, stressing that access to public venues is not restricted to any group that follows due process.
He noted that both the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress had previously used the venue after meeting all requirements, including payment of necessary fees.
He added that such events contribute to government revenue and are not arbitrarily denied.
On reports of a structural failure at the Kugbo Bus Terminal, the minister dismissed claims of a collapse, attributing the incident to damage caused by a windstorm.
According to him, only sections of the roofing were affected, while the main structure remained intact and under repair.
Wike assured the public that no casualties were recorded and urged residents to disregard misleading reports.
Providing updates on infrastructure development, the minister expressed satisfaction with the pace of ongoing projects across the Federal Capital Territory.
He disclosed that several road projects were expected to be completed by May 15, while streetlight installations would be finalised before the end of May.
Wike also highlighted progress at the Wassa relocation site for artisans, noting that the project would provide a permanent workspace for mechanics and other informal sector operators.
He said the project, being executed by CGC Nigeria Limited, was advancing steadily due to improved coordination between contractors and government agencies.
