The Federal Road Safety Corps has called on Nigerians with proven integrity to join its Special Marshals scheme as part of efforts to reduce road crashes across the country.
The Corps Marshal, Dr Shehu Mohammed, made the call on Wednesday at the 2026 Special Marshals’ National Retreat held in Akure, Ondo State.
Represented by the Deputy Corps Marshal in charge of Training, Mr Abiodun Akinlade, Mohammed said the credibility of volunteers remained critical to enhancing safety on the nation’s highways.
He described the retreat, themed “Repositioning Special Marshals for Professionalism, Strategic Partnership and Enhanced Service Delivery,” as a platform for reflection and renewed commitment.
“The FRSC will continue to rely on the commitment and professionalism of special marshals in addressing emerging challenges in road traffic management,” he said.
Mohammed added that road safety required collective responsibility, noting that modern traffic realities demanded stronger collaboration and a renewed sense of purpose among stakeholders.
“Our special marshals must not only complement the corps but also serve as ambassadors of discipline, integrity and excellence within their communities,” he stated.
In his remarks, the National Coordinator of Special Marshals, Dr Adaji Usman, commended the corps leadership for sustaining confidence in the volunteer corps.
He, however, urged members to uphold high ethical standards and prioritise their health, noting that several marshals had lost their lives in the line of duty.
“Our integrity is paramount. We must ensure our conduct reflects the values we represent at all times,” Usman said.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, who declared the retreat open, lauded the corps for its contributions to road safety, saying its interventions had saved numerous lives.
Represented by the Commander of the state’s security outfit, Amotekun, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, the governor pledged continued collaboration to safeguard road users.
The Deji of Akure, Oba Adetoyinbo Aladelusi, also commended the corps for its commitment to protecting lives on highways, describing its efforts as invaluable.
Dignitaries at the event included the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal; the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Commandant, Oluyemi Ibiloye; and the state Attorney General, Dr Olukayode Ajulo, among others.
