Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested three persons in connection with the alleged killing of 38-year-old Stanley Okirie and an attempted secret burial in Akute, Ifo Local Government Area.
Those arrested include Maureen Okirie, 35, alongside two minors, Salia Karikari, 15, and Jubril Karikari, 12.
The deceased was allegedly struck with a wooden pestle before efforts were made to conceal the incident by hurriedly burying the body in a shallow grave.
Police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said detectives from the Ajuwon Division acted on credible information about suspicious activity in the area, which led to the discovery of the scene.
According to him, officers moved swiftly to the location and intercepted one of the suspects while allegedly attempting to inter the corpse in a concealed grave.
He added that preliminary findings indicated that the victim sustained a fatal head injury consistent with an assault using a pestle. Investigations further suggested that the suspects, who are believed to be related to the deceased, were involved both in the attack and the attempt to cover it up.
Babaseyi disclosed that the suspected weapon had been recovered, while the remains had been deposited at a mortuary in Olambe for preservation and autopsy.
He further stated that the suspects are currently in custody and would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further interrogation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, condemned the development, describing it as shocking and deeply disturbing, particularly given the alleged family ties between those involved.
Ojajuni warned that any act of violence, as well as attempts to conceal criminal offences, would be met with strict legal consequences.
He assured that the command would pursue a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served, urging residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
The police also reminded members of the public to make use of its emergency contact lines for prompt reporting of crimes across the state.
