Details have emerged surrounding the death of the Assistant Organising Secretary of the All Progressives Congress in Kano State, Abdulsalami Ginsau, who reportedly died at Chida Hotels under controversial circumstances.
Ginsau, a lawyer and party stalwart, was said to have died on March 27 after allegedly becoming trapped in a malfunctioning elevator within the hotel premises.
The Kano State Chairman of the APC, Umar Haruna Doguwa, disclosed that the deceased had arrived in Abuja ahead of the party’s convention to coordinate accommodation for delegates from the state.
He explained that after successfully arranging lodging for the delegation, Ginsau checked into the same hotel but was later declared missing when he failed to show up at the convention, prompting a search by party members.
Doguwa said the matter was reported at the Utako Police Division, where officers informed them of an incident earlier recorded at the hotel. He added that the search eventually led to the discovery and identification of Ginsau’s body at the facility.
The APC chairman blamed the incident on alleged negligence by the hotel management, noting that some delegates had earlier complained about faults in the building’s elevator.
According to him, the remains of the deceased had been deposited for autopsy, while the police commenced an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to his death.
A police source confirmed that the case was reported by the hotel management on March 28 and that investigations were ongoing. The source added that the autopsy forms part of efforts to determine the cause of death.
When contacted, the Federal Capital Territory Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, could not be reached for comments, while the Divisional Police Officer in Utako said only the command’s spokesperson was authorised to speak on the matter.
The hotel management declined official comments, citing the ongoing investigation.
However, a source within the facility said about 150 rooms had initially been reserved for Kano APC delegates, but the number of attendees reportedly exceeded 1,000, overstretching available facilities.
The source further claimed that one of the elevators developed a fault and was forced open. Ginsau, who reportedly lodged on the third floor, was said to have entered the defective lift in the early hours of the day, after which it allegedly collapsed.
It was gathered that other delegates had already left for the convention venue, unaware of the incident, while the hotel only discovered something was amiss the following day after noticing an offensive odour, which led to the recovery of the body.
Meanwhile, the Kano State chapter of the APC has called for a thorough investigation into the incident. The State Secretary, Auwal Soja Sani Mainagge, said the deceased was in good health prior to the trip but was later found dead after being declared missing.
He disclosed that the party had constituted a committee to work with security agencies in unraveling the circumstances surrounding the death, adding that the Kano State Government had also intervened.
A family representative, Hamza Haladu, described the development as shocking, noting that Ginsau was hale and hearty before his journey to Abuja.
He said the state government had assured the family of a thorough probe into the incident, adding that the deceased would be buried in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites.
Ginsau, until his death, was a respected legal practitioner and corporate executive. He was the Chief Executive Officer of Ginsau & Sons and also practised with Ginsau & Co. Advocates, with expertise spanning corporate, commercial, and litigation matters.
He was educated at the Islamic University in Uganda and the Nigerian Law School, Abuja, and was widely regarded within the APC for his contributions to party organisation and strategy.
