A man in Sokoto State has sustained serious burns after his wife allegedly poured hot oil on his genital area following a dispute over an alleged phone conversation with another woman.

As reported by Daily Trust, Bello Abubakar, a resident of the Yar Gabas area of Sokoto metropolis, denied any wrongdoing, insisting that he had not been involved in an inappropriate relationship.

He described the attack as linked to what he called a spiritual condition affecting his wife.

Narrating the incident, Abubakar said it occurred shortly after he returned from performing the Subhi prayer at the mosque.

“I slept there after prayers and returned home around 8am. On arrival, I found my wife crying. When I asked what was wrong, she refused to speak,” he said.

Abubakar said he was preparing to leave for work when his wife called him to wait.

“I was lying on the bed when she entered holding a cup with melted butter. I did not suspect anything unusual, as she sometimes uses such cups for prayers,” he explained.

He added, “Suddenly, I felt intense heat on my private part and screamed. My hand was also burnt. The hot butter caused severe burns on my body.”

He is currently receiving treatment at a specialist hospital in Sokoto and his condition is reported to be improving.

Tasiu Abubakar, a senior brother of the victim, said the couple had been living peacefully, but alleged that the woman’s mother had previously opposed the marriage.

He suggested that the mother might have influenced her daughter to commit the act.

Both families have reportedly agreed to reconciliation and decided against pursuing legal action over the incident.

Efforts to contact the wife and her relatives were unsuccessful.

When contacted, the police spokesperson in Sokoto, DSP Ahmad Rufai, said the matter would be investigated, but he had yet to provide details as of the time of filing this report.
