A U.S. fighter jet was shot down over Iran, with one of the two crew members rescued after ejecting, U.S. officials said. This marks the first such incident in the nearly five-week-old conflict.
The Pentagon and U.S. Central Command have not commented on the incident. Details about the recovery remain scarce, including the identity of the crew member saved.
President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, but no further information was released.
Iranian authorities called on civilians to watch for survivors and circulated images that allegedly show the wreckage of the aircraft. The jet was identified as an F-15E Strike Eagle, which carries a pilot and a weapons systems officer.
U.S. airmen receive Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) training for such situations. Experts say staying undetected in Iran will be a major challenge for the remaining crew member.
The incident follows Trump’s threats to attack Iranian infrastructure and comes as the war spreads across the Middle East, leaving thousands dead and affecting global energy markets.
So far, 13 U.S. service members have died and over 300 wounded. No Americans have been taken prisoner. Intelligence indicates Iran still retains significant missile and drone capabilities.
Polls suggest most Americans want U.S. involvement in the conflict to end quickly, even if it means abandoning some strategic objectives set by the administration.
