Otanocha advocates nature-based engineering for sustainable industrial growth

A Professor of Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and Sustainable Production Systems at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Prof. Omonigho B. Otanocha, has called for a shift in engineering practice towards models that align with nature to drive sustainable industrial development.

Otanocha made the call on Wednesday while delivering the institution’s 13th inaugural lecture in Delta State, where he stressed the need to rethink industrial progress through environmental sustainability, circular economy principles, and modern production technologies.

Speaking on the theme, “Let There Be Light: Engineered Systems Response for Nature and Industrial Harmony,” the professor urged engineers to move beyond production-focused systems and embrace innovation driven by ethical considerations and environmental responsibility.

He described “light” as a metaphor for knowledge and innovation, noting that engineering must prioritise long-term ecological balance alongside technological advancement. According to him, industrial systems should be designed to complement nature rather than work against it.

Otanocha highlighted the growing importance of technologies such as additive manufacturing, laser-based systems, and digital fabrication, noting that they are helping to reduce waste, conserve energy, and promote efficient, on-demand production.

He also underscored the concept of industrial symbiosis, explaining that it allows waste from one production process to serve as raw material for another, thereby promoting efficiency similar to natural ecosystems.

The professor further examined global sustainability strategies, citing industrial policies in countries such as China, Japan, Germany, Egypt, and South Africa, which he said are leveraging digital innovation, environmental planning, and public-private partnerships to advance green industrialisation.

He urged policymakers, industry players, and researchers to adopt development strategies that integrate technology with environmental stewardship to ensure sustainable growth.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ezekiel Agbalagba, commended the lecturer for delivering what he described as an insightful and impactful presentation, noting that it bridged the gap between theory and practical application in engineering and sustainability.

Agbalagba added that the lecture served as a call to action for stakeholders to adopt innovative solutions that support sustainable development, while also praising the lecturer’s contributions to research and national growth.

The event attracted members of the university community, including principal officers, academic staff, students, and other invited guests.

The lecture concluded with the presentation of a commemorative plaque to Otanocha in recognition of his contribution to knowledge and sustainable industrial advancement.
