The Ondo State Police Command has intensified its clampdown on cult-related violence, arresting two suspected kingpins and dismantling a hideout in Ondo Town, in what authorities described as a major breakthrough against criminal gangs.
The arrests, carried out on April 11 by operatives of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad in Akure, followed credible intelligence supplied by a local vigilance group, leading to the disruption of an alleged cult network linked to recurring violent clashes in the state.
Police sources disclosed that the suspects are believed to be key members of the dreaded Eiye and Aiye confraternities, groups long associated with bloody rivalries and insecurity in parts of Ondo.
Investigations indicated that the duo allegedly played active roles in a violent confrontation that erupted on April 9 within the premises of Adeyemi Federal University of Education, where rival cult groups reportedly clashed, sparking panic and endangering lives.
In a significant twist, the suspects reportedly led detectives to a concealed hideout in the Oka Garage area of the town. A subsequent search uncovered a locally made pistol suspected to have been used in criminal operations.
The police said the suspects remain in custody as investigations deepen, with a manhunt launched for other fleeing members and efforts ongoing to recover additional arms.
Reaffirming the Command’s stance, the Commissioner of Police vowed sustained operations to rid the state of cultism and violent crime, warning that offenders would face the full weight of the law.
The Command also praised the role of community intelligence in the operation, urging residents to remain vigilant and continue to collaborate with security agencies to curb criminal activities.
Authorities assured the public of their commitment to maintaining security and preventing further breakdown of law and order across the state.
