The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign his position following approval from President Bola Tinubu to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
The development came after a meeting between the minister and the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where Adelabu reportedly presented a detailed account of his performance in the power sector over the past two and a half years.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji.
According to the statement, the minister used the opportunity to highlight key achievements recorded under his leadership, including efforts to improve electricity generation, enhance transmission infrastructure and implement reforms aimed at boosting efficiency across the sector.
A major highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy and its Strategic Implementation Plan, alongside a medium-to-long-term resource framework designed to guide the sector’s growth and sustainability.
The statement indicated that Adelabu would step down from office in the coming days, noting that the timing of his exit was intended to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms within the sector.
It added that his decision also aligns with the need to address prevailing challenges, including fluctuations in power generation linked to gas supply constraints, pipeline maintenance and outstanding financial obligations to gas suppliers.
President Tinubu was said to have commended the minister for his contributions and the progress made in repositioning the power sector, particularly in laying a solid policy foundation for future transformation.
The President also granted his consent for Adelabu to pursue his governorship ambition.
The minister, in turn, expressed appreciation for the President’s support, reaffirming his commitment to the development of the power sector and the broader national economy.
