Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, will on Tuesday host a professor of geology, Solomon Obaje, for its 60th inaugural lecture, with focus on the role of geoscience in national development.
The lecture, titled “Not Medicine, But Mission: From Disappointment to Discovery in Geoscience for National Development,” is scheduled to hold at the institution’s Multipurpose Hall by 2pm, with guests expected to be seated by 1:30pm.
A statement by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and Chairman of the Ceremonies Committee, Prof. Adebisi Daramola, disclosed that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, would preside over the event.
The university noted that the lecture forms part of its academic tradition and is expected to attract scholars, students and other stakeholders from within and outside the institution.
Obaje, who joined the university in 1990 as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Earth Sciences, rose through the ranks to become a professor in 2022.
He obtained his first degree in Geology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1988, and later earned a Master’s degree in Geology with specialisation in Mineral Exploration and Geochemistry from the same institution in 2002. He subsequently bagged a doctorate degree in Geology, specialising in Biostratigraphy, from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, in 2012.
Over the years, the don has served in several academic and administrative roles within the university, including Acting Head of Department, Departmental Examination Officer, Pioneer Postgraduate Coordinator and Programme Coordinator.
He has also contributed extensively to research, with numerous publications in local and international journals, and has participated in several academic conferences across countries such as Ghana, Egypt, Luxembourg and Turkey.
Beyond AAUA, Obaje has had teaching experience at Delta State University, Abraka; Salem University, Lokoja; and Kaduna Polytechnic.
His academic contributions have earned him several grants and recognitions, including the AAUA Research Grant in 2024, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund sponsorship in 2020, and the Federal Ministry of Education/World Bank STEP-B PhD Research Grant.
He is a fellow and member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society, the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists, and the International Society for Development and Sustainability.
The university said the inaugural lecture would provide insights into the relevance of geoscience in addressing national development challenges.
